Idaho Environmental Forum #157
Energy, Public Lands & Endangered Species: An Insiders' Report from Washington
SPEAKERS:
L. Michael Bogert, Counselor to the Secretary, U.S. Department of the Interior
C. Stephen Allred, Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management
James L. Caswell, Director, Bureau of Land Management
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The degree of access by Idahoans to the highest levels of federal natural resource policy making has been a remarkable feature of the current Administration. While Secretary Kempthorne held the reins at the Department of the Interior, several other prominent Idahoans have been tapped to play major roles in shaping environmental policy. Messers. Bogert, Allred, and Caswell will share the stage on September 10 to share with us what they have learned about the role of a conservative government in taking on hot button issues-from energy development on public lands to grizzly bears and global warming. What a change, going from advocacy for the state's perspective in contention with the federal government, to running the federal government! With only five months left in office, these key officials remain engaged in critical policy choices. Their actions have and will affect the course of natural resource development regardless of who wins the next national election. How did their expectations stack up against the reality? What worked? What would they do differently? And, most importantly, what needs to change? Hear from them yourselves, and bring your own questions.
