As chairman of thepowerful House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, there are few environmental issues that Congressman Simpson can't influence. The subcommittee has jurisdiction over the budgets of almost all Department of the Interior programs and agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and the National Park Service; as well as the budgets of the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Forest Service. In years past, being tapped as a "cardinal" (the title bestowed upon the chair of an appropriations subcommittee)was highly sought-after as it guaranteed the ability to steer earmarked spending to one's district and those of political allies. In the 112th Congress, Congressman Simpson will instead be on the front lines of the drive to cuthundreds of billions of dollars in federal spending and, in the present economy, nothing is sacred.
Please join us for lunch and hear what's headed for the chopping block, what's not, what's happening with the Central Idaho Economic Development and Recreation Act ("CIEDRA"), what's contained in the Omnibus Continuing Resolution, what may be the fate of the Equal Access To Justice Act ("EAJA"), the latest in the Solyndra debacle, whether EPA may follow through with various pending Clean Air Act regulations before the upcoming Presidential election, and other unique insight into the latest developments in Washington, D.C.
Congressman Simpson is serving his seventh term in the House of Representative for Idaho's Second Congressional District. In addition to serving on the Appropriations Committee, Congressman Simpson serves on the House Energy and Water Development Subcommittee, as well as the House Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Subcommittee. Esquire Magazine listed Congressman Simpson as one of the 10 Best Members of Congress in 2008 based on Simpson's focus on finding common ground and willingness to compromise.
